It means exactly what it sounds like: that specific page is not currently in Google’s index, so it cannot appear in search results no matter how good the content is. The good news is that this message is almost always fixable once you know which of a handful of causes is behind it.

What “URL Is Not on Google” Actually Means

Google has to crawl a page, then decide to index it, before it can rank. When Search Console reports URL is not on Google, one of those two steps has not happened. Crucially, this is a different problem from ranking poorly. A page ranking on page five is indexed and simply not competitive yet. A page that is not indexed is invisible entirely.

Cause One: The Page Is Genuinely Too New

If the page went live in the last few days, this message may simply reflect that Google has not gotten to it yet. New pages, especially on newer or lower-authority sites, can take days or occasionally weeks to be discovered and indexed.

Check the publish date before assuming something is broken

Newer domains generally wait longer than established ones

Cause Two: A Noindex Tag Is Blocking It

This is one of the most common culprits, and frequently an accident left over from development or a plugin setting.

Check the page source for a
noindex
meta tag

In WordPress, check Settings, Reading, for the “Discourage search engines” checkbox

Check your SEO plugin’s per-post indexing setting, which can override site-wide settings

Cause Three: Robots.txt Is Blocking the Crawler

If robots.txt disallows the URL or its parent directory, Googlebot never reaches the page at all.

Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt and read it directly

Search Console’s URL Inspection tool reports “Blocked by robots.txt” when this is the cause

Cause Four: A Canonical Tag Points Somewhere Else

If the page declares a different URL as its canonical version, Google will index that other page instead and report URL is not on Google for this one. This is correct behaviour when intentional and a real problem when accidental, which happens often with duplicate or near-duplicate pages.

Cause Five: The Page Is Orphaned With No Internal Links

Google discovers pages largely by following links. A page that no other page on your site links to, and that is missing from your sitemap, may simply never be found.

Add at least two or three internal links from established pages

Confirm the URL actually appears in your XML sitemap, which our guide on what a sitemap is and why your website needs one explains in more detail

Cause Six: Thin or Duplicate Content

Google sometimes crawls a page, evaluates it, and chooses not to index it. This usually shows as “Crawled, currently not indexed” rather than a hard URL is not on Google, but the practical outcome is the same. Pages that closely mirror other pages on your site, common with templated location pages, are the most frequent victims.

How to Actually Fix It, Step by Step

Run the URL Inspection tool and read the specific reason Google gives, rather than guessing

Fix whatever it names: remove the noindex, correct robots.txt, or fix the canonical

Add internal links pointing to the page

Click “Request Indexing” in the URL Inspection tool

Wait. Indexing after a request commonly takes days, not minutes

When This Signals a Bigger Site-Wide Problem

If a large share of your pages report URL is not on Google, the issue is rarely page-level. It usually points to crawl budget limits, a site-wide technical block, or a content quality pattern Google is declining to index. That is a diagnostic job rather than a quick fix, and it is exactly the kind of issue a proper technical SEO review is designed to surface.

FAQs

How long after requesting indexing should a page appear on Google?
Usually a few days, though it can stretch longer on newer or lower-authority sites. There is no guaranteed timeline.

Is “URL is not on Google” the same as being penalised?
No. A penalty is a manual action shown separately in Search Console. This message usually reflects a technical or discovery issue instead.

Can I force Google to index a page?
No. Requesting indexing signals intent, but Google still decides. Fixing the underlying cause matters more than repeated requests.

External links: Instagram | LinkedIn

Google Search Console Says “URL Is Not on Google”, What Now?
